Wrapping Up: Enjoy Meeting Trans in Charlotte

As of October 2017, the Campaign for Southern Equality has just published its Trans resource list for the South. In this new version of Trans in the South, you’ll find lists of trans-friendly service providers – from doctors to attorneys to counselors – across the South as well as resources to assist with funding medical transition. Over the past year we’ve worked hard to add more resources to each state in the guide.

Temporary CATS Bus Detour – Lovin’ Life Music Festival

The Scorpio –Located at Freedom Dr, this place in Charlotte has been around since 1968, and it’s the only real gay “club” in town. But to keep your options open I’ve created a list of venues from all corners of Charlotte. Another reason Hiatt put off living her authentic self is that she became a parent and adopted two children.

In this newsletter, we’ll take a look back at several key points in Charlotte’s LGBT history. Meanwhile, so-called “don’t say gay” bills like in Florida, battles over LGBT-themed books with sexually explicit passages such as "Gender Queer" and the place of trans athletes in sports have dominated the headlines for months. Such an amazing resource for local folx to access services in a safe, accepting, and supportive environment.

Trans Community- Charlotte

“I’ve got people I’m helping get through school, I have people I’m helping break into new career fields," Hiatt said. The experience hasn't been easy, it's an experience her parents never validated. — June is Pride Month, a time of celebration for visibility, equality, and self-affirmation for the LGBTQ community. After trying so many different things.Clothes;;)You need help, this is the real place to start. If you are interested in receiving care through the PATH program, please contact our Case Manager. I also faced difficulties when it came to dating and connecting with guys around the world due to a lack of awareness about trans-friendly venues.

I am only thankful and I mean so thankful that this place exists and that the world gives us in the LGBT community a chance to demonstrate that we are equals and have something to offer this world that is Paramount to the success of humanity. No one should face barriers to getting the healthcare they need. We are also proud to report that provider participation has grown from our initial group of 13 providers to have included meeting participation to an average of 100 providers annually.

This story first appeared as part of WFAE's EQUALibrium newsletter, exploring race and equity in the Charlotte region. Get the latest news and analysis in your inbox first by signing up here. Where residents and visitors alike can share news, events, gatherings, stories, and more.

72% of enrolled participants reside in Mecklenburg County and are receiving ARPA funded support. 28% reside in surrounding counties and are receiving limited services through donations. At night, the city offers incredible nightlife with plenty of LGBT+ friendly venues. There’s really a lot to do and you can also attend drag brunches. Of course, it has a lot of fetishists and chasers but don’t let that deter you because it’s a huge app so you’re bound to also find positive experiences.

Tirades, Welcome to Charlotte, Things to do, Buying/Selling, and Charity are all weekly topics. Lastly, if you’re into physical sports then you can also check out Stonewall Sports. They host both in-person and virtual events and workshops for the LGBTQ+ community.

“Some gays fear the simplest act, like holding hands in the park, will expose their secret life,” the story noted. Charlotte Police Chief Jesse James (no relation to the outlaw) told the newspaper that he believed homosexuality wasn’t a law enforcement problem. The Charlotte Pride Festival wrapped up on Sunday with a parade, floats, dancing and thousands of cheering people filling uptown in every variation of rainbow garb. But this year’s Pride took place against the backdrop of statewide and national fights over LGBT rights that hold center stage in our ongoing culture wars.

And we’ve significantly expanded resources related to HIV/AIDS services and added resources that offer support services for trans folks. In recognition and appreciation of grassroots work led by trans folks across the South, this update also includes links to local resource guides. Our Providing Access to Trans Healthcare (PATH) Program also provides free case management, mental health services, and medical care for uninsured and underinsured transgender and gender diverse individuals. This Directory is not an exhaustive list of all trans-affirming providers in the area and may not contain providers or resources for every health issue.

For some, the process will be easy, while for others, it might take some time. As a trans woman, I felt pretty safe here during my visit—way less sketchy stuff than in other places I’ve been. Making friends might be a bit tricky at first, but it gets easier, especially if you hit up bars and join meetups. The crowd is mixed and often has trans men and women but usually everyone leans towards their thirties and up.

That meant transgender women could use the women’s room in most public buildings (transgender men could use the men’s room, but that occasioned much less controversy). After Charlotte’s vote, state legislators in Raleigh quickly passed a new bill overturning the ordinance and forbidding other North Carolina cities from passing their own. Six months after the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage, Charlotte City Council’s decision to add sexual orientation and gender identity to its local nondiscrimination ordinance seemed like it might not be too controversial. After all, the biggest question in gay rights had just been decided by the highest court in the land.

“I decided to tear the mask off," Hiatt said. “I’m 45-years-old and I identify as a woman of transgender experience." I only wish that a place like this existed when I was a kid or a teenager. As a result of not having such a lovely place as this I held on to my shame and dysphoria, even self-loathing at times, and anger at God for putting me in the wrong body.
