As dance super-groups go, it’s hard to outdo Swedish House Mafia, the progressive house trio made up of Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso. Over its four-year life, the group became mainstays on the DJ Magazine Top 100 DJ list, pumping out festival-ready hits like the memorable “Miami 2 Ibiza” and “Save The World” and working with everyone from Coldplay to Pharrell. The 52-date arena world tour would begin November 16 in Dubai and then travel to India, parts of Europe and Europe before arriving in North America in February 2013. Shortly after, they announced two final sets called The Final Curtain where they would open and close Ultra 2013 in Miami. The U.S. leg of the tour sold out in minutes and ended up adding multiple dates to appease the demand.

The group was also holding down an Ibiza residency at Pacha where they performed Monday nights with their own branded series called The Masquerade Motel. Swedish electronic dance music supergroup Swedish House Mafia has pulled off a major coup for their diehard New York City fans. Axwell and Ingrosso more than a decade ago (2013) started their residency called Departures at Ushuaïa. The trio already played special sets at the iconic club but, they also played the Masquerade Motel at Pacha Ibiza in 2011.
Swedish House Mafia asked Brooklyn Mirage to open earlier this year. They said yes!
They have performed together under this name since 2007, and released world bangers such as “Don’t You Worry Child”, “Save the World”, “One”, and “Leave the World Behind”. In January 2024, Tomorrowland announced Swedish House Mafia will be performing at the 20 year anniversary festival called Life. Asked whom they’d like to collaborate with in the future, Axwell mentioned Willow Smith (“Great voice”) while Angello singled out FKA twigs (“I love her sonics”). The key to a fruitful partnership, they said, is finding someone willing to explore new ground, “so we’re both doing something we’re not used to,” Angello said.

English rapper Tinie Tempah brings the lyrical fire to this club dance floor jam, spitting catchy, clever verses that play on everything from FIFA to Calvin Klein and Playboy bunnies while Swedish House Mafia provides a trance-tinged chorus as backdrop. Seven years later, this one still bangs — in fact, if it wasn’t for the song’s dated references to Blackberry cell phones, we’d say it hasn’t aged at all. Below, relive the house trio’s prime with Billboard Dance‘s run-down of our favorite Swedish House Mafia songs.
Space and Eden Ibiza to collaborate for the 2024 season
Swedish House Mafia were dance music kings — and then, at the height of their reign, called it quits. Finally together again in Stockholm, they have a new label, new music and a new outlook. The euphoric record came about after Williams had heard the instrumental live at one of the group’s shows. After several run-ins at festivals, Swedish House Mafia finally suggested Williams drop by the studio. He did and mentioned afterward that the process was “really quick and really simple.” The record now has nearly 200 million streams across Spotify and YouTube. Their euphoric melodies, sleek airtight branding and strategic decisions catapulted them to the forefront of dance music.

Swedish House Mafia fans all over the world will remember Summer 2024 for a long time. “With [Slaiby] always being available and his team always chasing us, it works really well,” says Axwell. It’s kind of attached to his face.” The company’s experience with large-scale touring should help, too, with a planned 2022 global outing that will mostly hit Live Nation-affiliated or -aligned arenas and stadiums. Five years later, it seemed like the group might reunite when it closed out Ultra’s 20th anniversary in Miami.
The record broke into the Hot 100 and peaked at No. 6, garnering 835 million total streams (and counting) in the process. Less than two weeks after its release, the guys announced a farewell arena tour dubbed One Last Tour. The Swedes’ sophomore release, “Miami 2 Ibiza” featuring Tinie Tempah, earned the super-group their first No. 1 on the Dance Club Songs chart.

Genres such as Deep House, Tech House, and Techno are usually natural progressions from the SHM style of “big-room” progressive house music. Steve Angello has been playing a range of electro house, acid house, tech house, big-room house, and festival house within the larger EDM genre. I’ve seen them all perform smaller club gigs in front of a couple of hundred people around 4am that are way darker and underground than their festival gigs as the main act in front of tens of thousands of people (where they usually go all-in on the big hits). Sebastian was born in Stockholm into a musical family (his cousins Bianca, Benjamin, and Oliver are also musicians), and released his own and other artists’ music on his record company Refune before focusing on SHM in 2010. They then performed the hit song “A Moth to a Flame” with The Weeknd on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, which aired late at night. Swedish House Mafia have announced that they will be back at Ibiza’s famous Ushuaïa for a unique six-show residency this 2024 summer.

Furthermore, it serves as an exciting early kick-off to the Brooklyn Mirage’s 2024 season, a week ahead of its originally scheduled launch. Fans can anticipate a captivating live set bursting with the group’s signature energy. This special event also coincides with the release of their brand new single, ‘Lioness.‘ Be sure to pre-save the track here. The newest part of Swedish House Mafia’s long past with Ushuaïa Ibiza is going to be a historic set of events.
It positioned the Swedes as best friends who, while thrilled by their jobs, were often discontented with life on the road and, on occasion, with one another. In one scene, during a 2011 writing trip to Australia (where they plan to hole up in the studio and finish “Don’t You Worry Child”), Angello leaves a session to go get a neck tattoo — a move Axwell calls “retarded” once Angello has left the room. Swedish House Mafia has never done anything less than full throttle, and even its last goodbye was outsized. The group’s website listed their final show being November 24, 2012 at the Friends Arena in Sweden. Prior to that, they would headline Tomorrowland in Belgium and finish up their residency at Ushuaia in Ibiza. And I got to say, the smaller gigs in a dark club at 4am have definitely been my favourite ones, whereas the big main act festival gigs tend to be a bit too predictable, commercial, and choreographed for my taste.
I mean, if you move in with your best friend, you will have tension with him too. Now that we’re a little bit older and wiser, we look back and realise we needed a break. Swedish House Mafia promptly decided to split up in 2012 as they arguably were enjoying the peak of their commercial success, which is likely also what sparked the decision to bring the SHM wheels to a halt and focus on their individual careers instead.
“There were limitations before because Harry’s stuff was gonna be in there,” he said. Swedish House Mafia was already booked to take part in the festival when the coveted Sunday-night slot opened up; indeed, it was the first act announced for this year’s edition, which comes after the 2020 and 2021 shows were both called off due to COVID-19. The original plan was for the group to perform directly after Styles’ headlining set on Friday, Angello said in an interview before this week’s run-through. Seated outside at a ritzy Palm Springs hotel, he and Axwell vaped discreetly as they talked; at one point, Angello tucked a little pouch of snus under his top lip.
